In 1935 Walker Evans was hired by the Museum of Modern Art to create a portfolio of 450 photographs so as to secure a permanent record of the ground breaking exhibition "African Negro Art", then open at MoMA. The idea was to print 17 editions and to distribute them at no cost to Black Universities and specialized institutions, and to sell the rest to interested libraries throughout the world. Many of these prints were made by a young John Cheever. We regret that we are unable to identify either the artist, people or national origin of this sculpture as the only list we are aware that ties each image to a specific work resides at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, now closed during the pandemic. This print has been expertly framed.
